Etymology

From Old Norse stefja (to prevent), likely borrowed at a late stage rather than inherited. Arguably related to steðja (to stop) and thus from Proto-Germanic *stadiz. More likely related to stav (staff; rod), and thus from Proto-Germanic *stabaz.
