Etymology

Probably from spuma with an added suffix (perhaps influenced by analogy with fumega), or less likely from a Vulgar Latin *spumigāre. Cognate with Aromanian spumig, spumigari; cf. also Italian spumeggiare, Spanish espumear, Aromanian spumedz, spumari.
