From Proto-Balto-Slavic *parnas (wing), from Proto-Indo-European *pornóm (wing, feather). Cognate with English fern, Albanian fier (fern), Avestan 𐬀𐬥𐬆𐬭𐬀𐬞 (anərap, feather), Sanskrit पर्ण (parṇá, feather).
