From Spagna (Spain) +‎ -olo (derivative suffix), possibly also from Old Occitan espaignol, from a Vulgar Latin *Hispāniolus, from Latin Hispānus. Compare French espagnol, Portuguese espanhol, Spanish español. Doublet of épagneul.
