Inherited from Proto-Slavic *jьzpodъ, a univerbation of *jьz +‎ *podъ (under, below, beneath). Doublet of spod. Less likely continuing Proto-Slavic *podъ (floor), from Proto-Indo-European *pṓds (foot).
