[edit]From Dutch sociëteit (“society”), from Old French societé, from Latin societās, societātem (“fellowship, association, alliance, union, community”), from socius (“associated, allied; partner, companion, ally”), from Proto-Indo-European *sokʷ-yo- (“companion”), from Proto-Indo-European *sekʷ- (“to follow”).

Usage notes
[edit]The prominent example is Harmony Society, Batavia (Societeit de Harmonie). It was an elite social club in Batavia, Dutch East Indies. It was the oldest clubhouse in Asia when it was demolished.
