[edit]Ultimately from Italian soldato, either from:
- Swedish soldat + -ski, a pseudo-Russian suffix; compare the synonymous soldari, solttu, and for the suffix, flikuski;
- or a syncopic form of Russian солдатушки (soldatuški, “little soldier”), from Russian солдат (soldat).
