Etymology

[edit]

Literally "the blind Reetta". Many apocryphal theories exist, but written attestations do not appear to go beyond the late 20th century (1970s, as sokia Kreetakin), suggesting that the idiom is rather recent. Earlier puzzles include similar combinations, including one with slightly different names, and some kind of colloquial usage has likely existed for longer. A single, traceable origin is unlikely, as generally for terms of this kind.
