[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Latin societās via the nominative form. Doublet of società, a borrowing via the accusative societātem.
The backwards shift in stress is slightly unusual; for the more normal result, cf. figliòlo < fīlìolus. Compare, for a similar output, Sicilian cìvita.
