[edit]Borrowed from Middle Low German snappen (“speak rapidly”), which is probably related to snavel (“beak, snout”), from Old Saxon *snavel, from Proto-Germanic *snabulaz. Cognate of German schnappen, Dutch snappen. Compare origin of snopen.
