Inherited from Vulgar Latin *exmŭlgĕre, itself from Latin ex- + mulgēre (to milk), or as a variant of ēmulgēre with a change of prefix. Compare Aromanian zmulgu, zmuldziri, Albanian zmolje (fallow land), Italian smungere, Venetan smónzer, Asturian esmucir. An alternative past participle, smult (from Vulgar Latin *exmulctus, from mulctus; cf. Aromanian zmultu, Sardinian multu, murtu), also exists.
