From Old Norse slokna, from Old Norse slokinn, past participle of a verb from Proto-Germanic *slekwaną (“to go out; become extinguished”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)lew- (“slack; loose; limp”). Related to English slocken.

     he doesn't stop smoking

2. (by extension) to die
