[edit]From Proto-Brythonic *skuɨd, from Proto-Celtic *skeitos (“shield”), from Proto-Indo-European *skeyt-, from *skey- (“to cut, separate”). Cognate with Cornish skoes (“shield”), Welsh ysgwyd (“shield”), Irish sciath (“shield”). Related to Latin scūtum (“shield”) and Russian щит (ščit).
