From Old Norse *skýjóttr or skíóttr (perhaps already in the form skjóttr in late Old Norse, only attested in the late 15th and early 16th century with an ambiguous spelling), whence also Faroese skýggjutur. Equivalent to ský (cloud) +‎ -óttur.
