Derived from Old Norse skemtiligr (amusing, interesting, pleasant), compare Old Norse óskemtiligr (dull, uninteresting), skemtiliga (amusingly, pleasantly), skemta (to amuse, to entertain), skemtan or skemtun (entertainment) and skemtanligr (amusing, pleasant). By surface analysis, skemmta +‎ -legur.
