Derived from Old Norse skemtiligr (amusing, interesting, pleasant), compare Old Norse óskemtiligr (dull, uninteresting), skemtiliga (amusingly, pleasantly), skemta (to amuse, to entertain), skemtan or skemtun (entertainment) and skemtanligr (amusing, pleasant).
