Lithuanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Apparently formed from an unattested iterative *skalbyti, from an archaic skel̃bti (to wash) (not to be confused with modern skélbti (to announce, advertise), which is from a different root),[1] probably a b-extension of skélti (to split, cleave), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH- (to cut, to cleave).[2][3] The sense development would be "to cleave" > "to beat (clothes)" > "to wash". Cognates include Russian щель (ščelʹ, crack), Polish szczelina (crack) and Icelandic skilja (to separate).
