[edit]Borrowed from Russian шама́н (šamán), from Evenki шама̄н (şamān). First mentioned in 1714:
- 1714, Cornelis de Bruin, Reizen over Moskovie, door Persie en Indie, publ. by Wetstein, Oosterwyk & van de Gaete, page 11.
- Onder hen is iemant, dienze den naem geven van Sjaman of Koedieſnick, houdende hem voor hunnen Prieſter, of liever Toveraer, en geloovende dat hy hun alle geluk en ongeluk kan voorzeggen:
- Among them is someone, whom they give the name of Shaman or Kudisnick, holding him for their priest, or rather sorcerer, and believing that he can predict all fortune and misfortune to them:
