From French sirop, from Medieval Latin siruppus, syrupus, from Arabic شَرَاب (šarāb, a drink, beverage, wine, coffee, syrup), from شَرِبَ (šariba, to drink). Compare Russian сиро́п (siróp), Polish syrop, Italian sciroppo, Yiddish סיראָפּ (sirop).
