signal-to-noise ratio (plural signal-to-noise ratios)

  1. (engineering) A figure of merit that compares the strength of a signal carrying information to the level of noise interfering with it.
    Synonyms: signal-noise ratio, SNR, S/N, S/N ratio
  2. (informal) The quantity of useful or interesting information compared to irrelevant or incorrect information in a message or conversation.
