[edit]Unclear. The exact cognates are found in Belarusian сярмя́га (sjarmjáha), Russian сермя́га (sermjága) and Ukrainian серм'я́га (sermʺjáha). Brückner proposes a derivation from Lithuanian šìrmas (“ashen, grey”).
