[edit]From Late Latin sclavus or Sclavus, from Byzantine Greek σκλάβος (sklábos, “Slav”) or Σκλάβος (Sklábos).[1] Compare Romanian șcheau (“Bulgarian, (South) Slav”), șchiau, Aromanian shcljau. Doublet of skllav (“slave”), a later borrowing.
