Etymology

From Old French chalemais, perhaps from Late Latin calamellus (“little reed”), under the influence of Old French muse (“wind instrument”). Compare French chalumeau.

1. A woodwind instrument constructed with a double reed; shawm.
2. (infrequently) A flute or pipe.
