[edit]Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic съвѣтьникъ (sŭvětĭnikŭ), from Proto-Slavic *sъvětьnikъ, from *sъvětъ (“council”) + *-nikъ, from *větъ (“talk, agreement”). Compare Russian советник (sovetnik), Bulgarian съветник (sǎvetnik), Macedonian советник (sovetnik), Serbo-Croatian savetnik.
