From Old Galician-Portuguese servidom, from earlier servidõe, servidũe, inherited from Latin servitūdinem, derived ultimately from servus (slave, servant). Doublet of servitude, a borrowing from Latin. Compare Galician servidume and Spanish servidumbre.
