Etymology

[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish سمیز اوت (semiz ot),[1][2] can be analyzed as semiz (fat, adj) +‎ ot (grass, herb) +‎ -u (possessive suffix). The unusual possessive suffix in an adjective compound is possibly a remnant from former semizlik otu.

Cognate with Uyghur سېمىزئوت (sëmiz'ot, common purslane).
