[edit]From Proto-Mon-Khmer *(s)ʔəm ~ *(s)ʔəəm ~ *(s)ʔuum ~ *(s)ʔuəm (“warm”); cognates include Khmer ស្អំ (sʼɑm, “warm”), Vietnamese ấm (“warm”) and Khasi om-om (“slightly warm”). Malay suam is probably a Mon-Khmer loan.
