Etymology 1

Uncertain. Said to derive from s- (pejorative prefix) +‎ coreggia (flatus, fart). Ultimately from a vulgar scureggia. Alternatively, it could be an adapted borrowing or a derivation related to Ancient Greek σκῶρ (skôr); cf. scoria.
