German
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- schneuzen (pre-1996)
Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German sniuzen, from Old High German snūzen, snūzōn, from Proto-Germanic *snūtijaną. The ä was introduced in 1996 due to an alleged folk-etymological connection to Schnauze, as also in Greuel / Gräuel, but such spellings are even controversial to many a voice who adheres to the reformed rules.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]schnäuzen (weak, third-person singular present schnäuzt, past tense schnäuzte, past participle geschnäuzt, auxiliary haben)
- (reflexive) to blow one's nose (to expel mucus from nose)
Usage notes
[edit]- The spelling schnäuzen has been the prescribed spelling since the German spelling reform of 1996 (the Rechtschreibreform). In the affected areas, the previous spelling (schneuzen) is now less common, and may be regarded as a misspelling.
