[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *smakkijan (“to taste”), from * Proto-West Germanic *smakku (“a taste”), from Proto-Indo-European *smegʰ-, *smeg- (“to taste”). Compare English smack and smatch, as well as Lithuanian smagù (“cheerful, enjoyable, pleasant”).
