[edit]From Middle High German smæhen, from Old High German smāhen, from Proto-Germanic *smēhijaną (“to reduce; belittle; despise”), from Proto-Indo-European *smēyg- (“small, thin, delicate”). See also Dutch smaad (“slander”), Proto-Germanic *smikraz (“fine, fair”), Proto-Germanic *smēhaz (“little”).[1]
