[edit]Etymology
[edit]17th century, from Hebrew שָׁחַט (šāḥaṭ). The umlaut possibly spread from the derivative Schächter (“Jewish butcher”), where it may have sprung from analogy with unrelated Schlächter (“butcher”), but a verb form with -a- seems unattested.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]schächten (weak, third-person singular present schächtet, past tense schächtete, past participle geschächtet, auxiliary haben)
- (chiefly Judaism, Islam) to slaughter by bleeding out
