[edit]Past participle of scegliere, corresponding to a Vulgar Latin *exeltus, from *exelctus, from *exēlēctus, from Latin ex (“out of, from”) + ēlēctus (“picked, chosen, elected”). Compare Sicilian sceltu, scertu, Venetan sièlto, Friulian sielt; see also French élit.
