French
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Middle French saurir, from Old French sorir, from Frankish *saurijan, from Proto-Germanic *sauzijaną (“to dry, sear”), from Proto-Germanic *sauzaz (“dry”). By surface analysis, saur + -ir. Cognate with English sear.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]saurir
- (transitive) to smoke (herrings)
- (transitive, Normandy) to smoke (ham)
Conjugation
[edit]This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
