Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish صنجی (sancı), from the same root as sançmak (to stab) and sancak (flag, banner).

sancı (definite accusative sancıyı, plural sancılar)

  1. a pain in the gut: colic, stomach ache, labor pain, etc.
    • 1939 September 4, advertisement on page 6 of Cumhuriyet:
      Kanzuk URİNAL. Karaciger, böbrek, taş ve kumlarından mütevellid sancılarınız, damar sertlikleri ve şişmanlık şikâyetlerinizi URİNAL ile geciriniz.
