[edit]Ultimately from Sanskrit सम्प्रत्यय (sampratyaya, “firm conviction; perfect trust; confidence; faith; belief”) or possibly sam- + *palataya, ultimately from Sanskrit प्रत्यय (pratyaya, “belief; trust; faith; confidence”). Compare Kapampangan salpantaya, Maranao paratiyaya, Tausug paratsaya, Javanese ꦥꦼꦂꦕꦪ (percaya, “to believe, rely on, trust”), Malay percaya (“faith; belief; trust”), Sanskrit प्रत्यय (pratyaya, “belief; trust; faith; confidence”), Old Javanese parcaya.
