- Of the non-pleurodeline salamandrids, we have retained Salamandrina and the salamandrines Chioglossa and Salamandra; we have excluded the salamandrines Mertensiella (sister-group to Chioglossa [1 ,2 ]), which is poorly known, and Lyciasalamandra, which is very similar to but generally somewhat more paedomorphic than its sister-group Salamandra.
