From Proto-Eastern Algonquian *sakēhīkan, from unknown element *sakēh-, perhaps meaning “to climb”, + *-īkan (inanimate noun suffix), compare Abenaki lôdawôgan (“ladder”), from lôdawa (“to climb”). Cognate with Unami sahkehikàn (“ladder, stairs”), Penobscot skówhikan (“fish ladder”).
