saajo
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Based on dialectal variants saijo, saajio, saario, saatio, a common proto-form *saadio (*saaẟio) can be reconstructed.[1] Possibly an obscured derivative saari (“island”) + -io, in which the -r-, which is a common Western Finnish dialectal development from *-d-, has been interpreted as such, resulting in the other variants; this would imply that the form with -r- is primary.
