Inherited from Ottoman Turkish صرف (ṣırf, pure, mere, sheer (said of that which is poor or bad)),[1][2] from Arabic صِرْف (ṣirf, pure, absolute, mere, clear), from صَرَفَ (ṣarafa, to turn, to divert, to turn away, to avert).[3]
