From Ottoman Turkish صیغمق (sığmak, to go in, get in), from Proto-Turkic *sïg- (to enter, fit into).[1]

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (sıɣ-, to fit into), Azerbaijani sığmaq (to go in), Bashkir һыйыу (hıyıw, to fit), Kazakh сыю (syü, to fit in), Kyrgyz сыюу (sıyuu, to fit in), Southern Altai сыйар (sïyar, to go (into)), Turkmen sygmak (to find room), Uzbek sigʻmoq (to fit in).
