[edit]From Middle Irish sub, from Old Irish suib, from Proto-Celtic *subi (“strawberry”), of unknown, likely pre-Celtic substrate origin. Cognate with Irish sú (“red berry”), Manx soo (“berry”), Welsh syfi and Cornish sevi (“strawberries”).
