[edit]Inherited from Old French sojorner by vowel dissimilation (first ‘o’ → ‘é’), inherited from Vulgar Latin *subdiurnāre, from Latin sub- (“under, a little over”) + Late Latin diurnus (“lasting for a day”). Cognate to English sojourn.
