[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]Adverb
[edit]såpass (not comparable)
- to such a (high) degree; so, such, enough
- Synonym: så (“so”)
- Vi var såpass nära älgen att vi kunde känna lukten av den
- We were so close / close enough to the moose that we could smell it ("to such a degree close to the moose that we could smell it")
- Med en såpass kraftfull missil vinner vi kriget enkelt
- With such a powerful missile, we will easily win the war
Usage notes
[edit]Often strictly redundant compared to a plain så. The "pass" can intuitively be thought of as "degree."
Interjection
[edit]såpass
- (as a question or interjection) to that degree(?), that much/many?, is that so?
- – Vi sålde hundra syltburkar på marknaden. – Så pass? Det var inte illa.
- – We sold a hundred jars of jam at the market. – That many? Not bad.
- – Vi ska träffa kungen imorgon. – Så pass? Häftigt!
- – We're meeting the king tomorrow. – Really ("To that degree (of things being out of the ordinary)")? Cool!
Usage notes
[edit]Though not a natural translation, "To that degree?" should give the right idea, referring to for example quantity or how extraordinary something is.
