running coupling (plural running couplings)

  1. (physics) A coupling whose strength measurement appears to deviate from its true value as the energy scale at which it is probed shrinks, the deviation being a consequence of higher-order interaction terms and associated renormalization issues becoming relevant; metaphorically, a coupling whose strength "runs" from its limiting macroscopic value.
