From Makasar rupiah, from Hindi रुपीया (rupīyā), variant of रुपया (rupyā), from Urdu رپیا (rupayā), coined by Mughal emperor Sher Shah Suri (1540–45), from Sanskrit रूप्यक (rūpyaka, silver coin), from Sanskrit रूप्य (rūpya, wrought silver).
