Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Vulgar Latin robur (oak). The ending may be either reanalysis as -ull or resonant dissimilation as also in Spanish roble, Sicilian rùvulu. The semantic shift towards pine may have been influenced by phonetic similarity with Proto-Slavic *borъ (pine).
