Etymology

Compound of rosvo (robber) +‎ paisti (roast), "robber's roast"; the word broke into common vocabulary and the dish was made popular by Veikko Huovinen's book Lampaansyöjät (1970), in which the main characters stole sheep and prepared them for food in heated earth pits.
