Etymology

[edit]

By surface analysis, reda (take care of (oneself), order) +‎ -lös (-less). Likely from Middle Low German redelōs. If so, the first syllable is closer in meaning to rädda (rescue), thus originally "helpless". Compare origin of Dutch reddeloos, German rettlos, Icelandic reiðalauss.
