From Proto-Balto-Slavic *raudas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rowdʰ-ós, from *h₁rewdʰ-. Cognates include Latvian ruds, Proto-Slavic *rudъ and English red. See also raũdas (reddish-brown).
