rail motor (plural rail motors)

  1. (rail transport) Alternative form of railmotor.

      A rail motor was introduced about 1905, and in July, 1908, there were actually some 27 runs each way daily on the branch.

      The L&YR built a small number of these trains, known as 'Rail Motors', for rural branch lines. It was only fitting that the Horwich branch should have its own.
